Looking for a special treat for your sweetie on this Valentine’s Day? The Arts Council of Moore County has the answer. Take him or her to the annual Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz event on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Carolina Hotel at Pinehurst Resort.

As the Arts Council’s premier event, the 2018 Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz will star trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis and his quintet. Delfeayo Marsalis is one of the top trombonists, composers, and producers in jazz today. Born in New Orleans, Marsalis was destined to a life in music.

He states, “I remember my dad (Ellis Marsalis) playing piano at the house, and me laying underneath the piano as a child, listening to him play.

Delfeayo attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts high school and majored in both performance and audio production at the Berklee College of Music. He has toured internationally with many renowned bandleaders, including Art Blakey, Slide Hampton, Max Roach, and Elvin Jones.

During a tour with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, he was filmed as part of the Ken Burns documentary, Jazz, and he was an integral part of Marsalis Family: A Jazz Celebration, a DVD that assembled all of the musical Marsalis’ for the first time and was featured on PBS.

In 2011, Delfeayo and the Marsalis family (his father and brothers, Branford, Wynton and Jason) earned the nation’s highest jazz honor—a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award.

The purpose of this event is to benefit the Arts Council and its many arts programs and services presented throughout Moore County. Some of these programs are offered to all Moore County schools, such as our Performing Arts in Moore Schools (PAMS) Program, which presents at least one professional performing artist in every Moore County school.

The Arts Council also gives our young people the opportunity to display their artistic talents in the Campbell House Galleries as part of the annual Young People’s Fine Arts Festival and to share their acting talent on stage during the annual Summer Theatre Camps and various youth productions throughout the year. Because of Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz, the Arts Council is able to fulfill its mission: Inspire and Strengthen Our Community Through the Arts.
