One man was airlifted after taking out a power pole and downing power lines in an accident in Aberdeen.

The accident occurred at 11:12 a.m. on Hwy 5 between Linden Rd and Turning Leaf Way. Emergency crews found a silver Nissan Versa on its side at the edge of the road with power lines down all around the SUV after it crashed into a power pole. The downed power lines set the grassy area beside the road on fire. Fire crews extinguished the fire while emergency crews worked on the victim.

Emergency crews used hydraulic tools to extricate the man from the vehicle. Due to his injuries, a medivac helicopter was called to the scene, and it landed just down the street from the wreck at Turning Leaf Way to transport the male victim to a trauma center.

Hwy 5 was completely shut down for over an hour while emergency crews and crews from the power company worked to clear the scene. Drivers were detoured down Sandpit Road on the Aberdeen side and forced to turn onto Linden Road or turn around on the Pinehurst side of the accident.

Aberdeen Police are investigating the cause of the accident; however, witnesses said the driver looked distracted before hitting the power pole.

Responding to the accident were Pinehurst Fire & Rescue, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Aberdeen Police Department, and Pinehurst Police Department.
