Driver suffers medical emergency, crashes in Pinehurst

Two people were transported to the hospital after a driver suffered a medical episode in Pinehurst Monday afternoon. The incident happened on Blake Boulevard at Quail Haven Retirement Village shortly after 2 p.m. 

Officials on scene told Sandhills Sentinel that the vehicle was traveling northbound when the driver lost consciousness. His wife, who was in the passenger seat, grabbed the steering wheel in an attempt to regain control, but the vehicle struck a fire hydrant, continued a short distance, and overturned, coming to rest on its roof in the parking lot of Quail Haven.

Both occupants were injured in the crash. First responders said the male driver was alert and talking when he was taken to a local hospital. The female passenger also sustained injuries but was reported to be in stable condition.

The car traveled a short distance across the parking lot after striking hte hydrant. 

The crash damaged the fire hydrant and caused traffic backups in the area. Part of Blake Boulevard was temporarily blocked, though vehicles were still able to pass through.

The Pinehurst Police Department and local fire and rescue units responded to the scene. The cause of the medical emergency was not immediately released.
