A family is safe after their home was severely damaged in a fire on Wednesday. The incident happened at a home in the 700 block of Loblolly Drive in the Woodlake community near Vass.

Multiple agencies were dispatched to the blaze around 11:30 p.m., and some responding units reported seeing the fire’s glow in the night sky from a mile or more away.

Firefighters had to lay over 400’ of large-diameter hose to the nearest hydrant and then begin an attack on the fire. The garage was completely destroyed, with only the exterior walls left standing. The home also sustained extensive damage from fire and smoke.

Sandhills Sentinel spoke with Cypress Pointe Fire Chief Mike Cameron, who stated, “Operational smoke detectors are the main reason this family is safe right now. They alarmed and woke the family up early enough for them to get to safety.”

Firefighters were on the scene for several hours, wetting down hot spots and checking for extension of fire into other areas of the home.

Moore County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

The American Red Cross was contacted and is assisting the family.

A GoFundMe page has been created.
