Woman killed in Southern Pines rollover crash

A woman died in a single-vehicle crash in Southern Pines Sunday evening. The 911 call came in just before 7 p.m. about a crash in front of McDeeds Creek Elementary School on Camp Easter Road. The first arriving emergency crews found a vehicle upside down with a woman still inside. A second rescue unit was requested to assist.

As firefighters worked to extricate the woman from the vehicle, a child’s car seat was found. This initiated a search of the surrounding woods for any sign of a child. After a short while, they were able to determine there was no child involved in the wreck.

About 25 minutes after the extrication began, EMS pronounced the woman deceased at the scene.

Initial reports at the scene indicate the driver had just come around the traffic circle before the school. As she was passing the school, she lost control of the car and crashed, coming to rest against a tree off the road.

Southern Pines Police are investigating the crash, with the assistance of the N.C. Highway Patrol. Her identity was not released.

Responding to the scene were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Whispering Pines Fire and Rescue, Cypress Pointer Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Public Safety, Southern Pines Police, and the N.C. Highway Patrol.
