Historic Powell Funeral Home on New Hampshire Avenue in downtown Southern Pines is moving to a new location to better serve the Moore County community and will be holding a relocation auction at its current location on Thursday, June 13 at 6 p.m.  A historic fixture in the Moore County community, Powell Funeral Home has operated continuously since 1895.

Calling Powell Funeral Home “the oldest sustaining business in Moore County,” owner/director Robert Nunnaley explained that this is not the first time that Powell Funeral Home has changed locations.

“Over the years, Powell Funeral Home has been in three different locations in Southern Pines, and we’re getting ready to move it to its fourth location,” Nunnaley explained.

The current location of Powell Funeral Home on New Hampshire Avenue is special because it is located underneath the upstairs apartment in which D.A. “June” Blue, the second owner of the funeral home from 1948 until his death in 1987, lived and raised his family.

Nunnaley promised that even in its fourth location, Powell Funeral Home will continue to deliver the same quality of care and customer service that it has provided since 1895.

“Powell Funeral Home has meant a lot to the people of Moore County through the years, and we’ll be able to continue that tradition to an even greater extent in a new, more convenient location,” Nunnaley explained.

To make room for all-new interior furnishings at its new location, Powell Funeral Home will be holding a live, on-site evening auction at 160 E. New Hampshire Avenue, Southern Pines.

Included in the sale will be multiple sets of matching upholstered chairs, two Baldwin organs, dozens of wooden folding chairs, matching couch sets, wooden display cabinets, coffee tables, paintings, curio cabinets, a reposing table, a roll-top desk, chests-of-drawers, lamps, antiques, and more.  Virtually all the furnishings that will be sold at auction are in immaculate condition.

Powell Funeral Home will still be operating, and the staff will be providing guided previews of the auction items until the date of the auction.
