One of the most rewarding aspects of the Sandhills Bogeys is the tradition of local families hosting players. This support is vital to the organization, and the Bogeys deeply appreciate the community’s ongoing help, said Jay Francis, general manager of the Bogeys, in a press release.
The players are talented college athletes from across the country who have committed to play in the Sandhills community. Coming from diverse backgrounds and needing a home base for the summer, they rely on the generosity of host families.
Mary Howell, a valued host family member, shared, “Hosting a player isn’t just about providing a place to stay; it’s about welcoming them into your home, supporting their journey, and becoming part of their extended baseball family. These athletes come from different places, bringing passion, discipline, and love for the game.”
Howell also highlighted that being a host family means more than just offering accommodation – it’s like gaining a new family member.
“You get to share in their successes and play a vital role in their development on and off the field,” she explained. “It’s a rewarding experience that makes a lasting impact not just on them, but on your family as well.”
Francis said host families with children have had great experiences hosting a Bogey. The entire family becomes part of the Bogey family, but the kids gain the most from it by being part of something exciting. They also gain an older brother, as Aslynn Millen explains. Aslynn’s family is a repeat host, and they look forward to it all year.
“We’re so excited to host again; my kids look forward to this all year long!” said Millen. “They love being a part of the team in their special way and love having a big brother all summer long.”
The Woosley family decided to become a host family because they wanted to support a young athlete’s journey while enriching their own lives with new connections and experiences.
“We decided to host a Bogey for the first time this summer because we believe in the power of community, mentorship, and hospitality,” Danielle Woolsley said. “As a dual-military retired family, we value hard work, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence- qualities that athletes embody.”
The Woosley family aspires to offer Sandhills Bogeys players a supportive environment characterized by rest, encouragement, and the provision of home-cooked meals as they pursue their athletic goals. As stated by the Woosleys, “We pray that through this experience, we can be a blessing to them just as they are to us.”
Host families also receive perks like season tickets, a host family cookout, being a part of host family appreciation night, and, of course, making an everlasting connection.
The season is approaching fast, and the Bogeys still need host families for this summer. If you are interested, visit www.sandhillsbogeys.com/host-a-player or email the Bogeys Host Family Coordinator Joanne Chiapperino at [email protected].
