Gus Ulrich, director of instruction and head of the Pinewild Golf Academy and head coach of the men’s golf team at Sandhills Community College, captured the Carolinas PGA Senior Professional Championship title, held Aug. 18–19, at Catawba Country Club in Newton, North Carolina.
Ulrich delivered two flawless rounds of 67, finishing at 5-under-par to claim the championship title in a highly competitive field. His steady play edged out Wake Forest University coach Jerry Haas, who finished one shot back at 139.
“It’s always special to win in the Carolinas Section; the level of competition here is unlike anything else in the country,” said Ulrich. “I’m fortunate to be able to balance my playing with coaching at Sandhills and teaching at Pinewild. Sharing the game with students and players every day keeps me sharp and makes victories like this even more rewarding.”
This latest win builds on a career of competitive success. Ulrich first captured the Carolinas PGA Senior Professional Championship in 2016, and nearly a decade later has claimed the title again. Along the way, he has also won the Carolinas PGA Section Championship, earned three Senior Player of the Year honors, and competed on national stages, including the U.S. Senior Open and Senior PGA Championship. Beyond his own playing record, Ulrich has led the Sandhills Community College men’s team to multiple NJCAA Division III National Championships while directing the Golf Academy at Pinewild for more than a decade.
“We are thrilled for Gus and proud to see his talent and commitment recognized once again,” said Chris Little, general manager of Pinewild Country Club, in a press release. “We’re lucky to have such a talented player leading our golf academy. He’s an inspiration who has helped hundreds of players of all ages find themselves in the game. I know I speak for our entire community when I say we’re excited and proud to see him take home this win.”
