TDA releases new trail guide for Moore County

The Moore County Tourism Development Authority (TDA) has announced its first-ever official trail guide for Moore County. Sandhills On Foot: A Moore County Trail Guide combines custom cartography by illustrator Janis Daughterty, editorial storytelling by Mark Caskie, and a gold-foil birch wood cover to create a timeless and functional keepsake. The guides are available exclusively at Against the Grain in downtown Southern Pines and are being sold for $5.00 each. All the proceeds from the sale of the guide will be split between Foothills Outdoors, a non-profit organization based in Robbins, providing low-cost or free outdoor recreational opportunities, and Friends of Weymouth Woods.

Sandhills On Foot is more than a traditional outdoor guide — it is a beautifully designed and curated resource that highlights Moore County’s natural beauty and outdoor experiences. The guide is organized by trails in Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Robbins, and Weymouth Woods, and it features easy strolls in Foxfire, Pinebluff, Aberdeen, and Cameron. It also highlights the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens and presents an illustrated roundup of the flora and fauna unique to the Sandhills.

“We couldn’t be more pleased about how our new trail guide captures the spirit of our trails and in a way that is whimsical, informative and a true keepsake,” said Visit Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen President and CEO Phil Werz. “This was also a great project for us as we have really leaned into telling more people about our amazing trails in Moore County, plus the guide will benefit a couple of great organizations that love and preserve our outdoor spaces.”

Since the pandemic, Visit Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen has dedicated increased efforts to promote dozens of trails and experiences in Moore County. In 2023, the organization supported the Visit N.C. campaign “Year of the Trail” which was created to celebrate the state’s extensive network of hiking paths, greenways, and blueways, and to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1973 North Carolina Trails System Act. Since then, the TDA has also become part of Outdoor N.C. and is a member of the Great Trails State Coalition.

Additionally, the organization created the Pinecone Pathways Program, a partnership with glassmakers at Starworks in Star and Seagrove Potter Crystal King to produce seasonal scavenger hunts where items like glass and pottery pinecones and peaches are hidden on numerous Moore County trails.
