Those interested in adopting or sponsoring a highway now have a user-friendly tool that shows routes available for cleanup in all 100 North Carolina counties thanks to a new litter management website and interactive map.
The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Roadside Environmental Unit has launched a website that helps current volunteers see where their assigned roadways are, markets the Sponsor-a-Highway program, and makes it easier for volunteers to report the amount of litter collected.
“This is the first step in efforts to ensure North Carolina looks its best for all those who work, live and visit here,” says Don Lee, state roadside environmental engineer. “The interactive map and reporting features make it much easier for the public to let us know where cleanup is needed, and also provides a way for them to get involved.”
In 2017, nearly 5,000 Adopt-A-Highway groups removed more than 474 tons of litter from almost 10,000 miles of state roadways. More information on joining the Adopt-A-Highway and the Sponsor-A-Highway programs can be found on the NCDOT website.
