Inmate passes away in custody at Moore County Detention Center

A 31-year-old inmate at the Moore County Detention Center died Monday after experiencing a medical emergency, said the Moore County Sheriff’s Office in a press release on Friday afternoon.

According to the release, staff discovered Phylis McCrimmon unresponsive in her cell around 9 a.m. and immediately began administering emergency aid until emergency medical services arrived. McCrimmon was transported to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

“Our detention staff responded quickly and did everything within their power to provide emergency care,” Sheriff Ronnie Fields said. “I am proud of their professionalism and the urgency with which they acted. Sadly, despite their efforts, the outcome was not what we hoped for.”

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation, as is standard protocol in in-custody deaths. Officials said the agency will determine the official findings regarding McCrimmon’s death.

The sheriff’s office expressed condolences to McCrimmon’s family and loved ones.
