Lightning strike ignites storage shed Vass

A family’s storage shed was destroyed by fire after a lightning strike Saturday. The fire was off Smith Street in Vass around 7 p.m.

The lightning strike occurred during the heaviest part of Saturday’s thunderstorm. Family members heard the lightning strike behind the home but could not see any damage.

It was a short while later when they heard fire trucks on the road behind the residence and saw their storage shed on fire.

The first fire units reported seeing a dark plume of smoke from blocks away as they were enroute. Upon arrival, the shed was fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters worked quickly to get the fire under control. The shed was completely destroyed.

The family members stated they were thankful the lightning had struck the shed and not their home.

Responding to the scene were Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue and Moore County EMS.
