Neva Scheve, West End resident and President of the Sandhills Photography Club, has won second place in the Wildlife in North Carolina 2019 Photo Competition, bird category.

The annual photo competition, now in its 16th year, is sponsored by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. The commission is the state agency that works to conserve and sustain the state’s fish and wildlife resources. This year, more than 1,500 images were submitted by amateur and professional photographers in 10 categories. All the photographs must have been taken in North Carolina.

“I love taking photos of birds,” said Neva. “My husband and I spend a lot of time in the Atlantic Beach area, and I visit Ford Macon State Park often because the birds are so abundant there. This day in February, there was a large flock of ibis feeding in the pond. This particular bird was climbing around on a spindly branch, and he caught my eye. He posed for me there for a few minutes until a man running came bursting by on the trail and spooked them all. I managed to get this shot just before they all flew away.”

The winners were selected by a panel of judges from the N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission, the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences and professional wildlife photographers.

“Every year the judges for this competition are tasked with the challenge of picking the best images from hundreds of submissions.” Said Marsha Tillett, art director of Wildlife in North Carolina. “And every year it seems to get more and more difficult as we have so many great images submitted to the competition.”

Wildlife in North Carolina is a magazine published by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission that helps promote the state’s wildlife resources and habitats while promoting outdoor recreation with stunning photos and in-depth stories. To subscribe to the magazine, visit www.ncwildlife.org/winc.
