Man dies after Vass fire

A fire in Vass that destroyed a car and damaged a home claimed the life of a man. Initially dispatched as a vehicle fire, the blaze eventually caught the house on fire before firefighters could put it out.

On Monday evening, the fire happened on Water Hills Lane, off Union Church Road, just outside Vass town limits.

Emergency units arrived to find a vehicle on fire in front of the home. While preparing to fight the vehicle blaze, the man ran into the house.

Cypress Pointe Fire Chief Mike Cameron entered the home through the front door and found the man just a few feet inside with fire spreading around him.

Other firefighters immediately assisted him with getting the man outside and began medical treatment. A medevac helicopter was requested to land at the Vass park.

The man was airlifted to UNC Burn Center where he passed away.

Moore County Public Safety and several other agencies were on the scene investigating the cause of the fire.
