man airlifted motorcycle crash

A man was airlifted after crashing his motorcycle on U.S. Highway 1 outside Vass Sunday morning. The accident occurred at JB Short Flooring just before 9:30.

The motorcycle traveled almost 300 feet after leaving the road and ended up in a wooded area next to a fence. The rider was located lying on the ground approximately 40 feet from the motorcycle.

Fortunately, a man traveling in the opposite direction saw the accident occur. Otherwise, the man might not have been seen by drivers for quite some time.

EMS worked to stabilize the victim at the scene while the helicopter was dispatched. The UNC helicopter experienced mechanical issues en route and a second helicopter was dispatched.

The UNC helicopter, Tarheel 5, landed in a field next to Ed’s Gun Shop where a landing zone had been set up. The victim was flown to UNC Hospitals.

The NC Highway Patrol was on the scene and will be investigating the accident.

Responding to the accident were Cypress Point Fire & Rescue, Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Department, and N.C. State Highway Patrol.
