Man airlifted after shooting in Southern Pines

A male victim was airlifted to a hospital late Monday afternoon after a shooting in Southern Pines. The shooting occurred around 6 p.m. in the 300 block of Shaw Avenue at Brookside Park Apartments.

While Southern Pines Police were en route to Brookside Park Apartments, emergency crews staged at the soccer fields and playground area across from the entrance to the apartments. Once police secured the scene, emergency crews went to the victim.

When emergency crews arrived, the man was conscious and alert. But due to the severity of his injuries, a helicopter was called.

Southern Pines Fire & Rescue set up a landing zone at Memorial Park on Morganton Road. Moore County EMS transported the victim to the ball field. A UNC helicopter flew the patient to an area trauma center.

Deputy Chief Charles Campbell said this was not a random act of violence. Nijalon Walker, 26, of Southern Pines, was arrested for assault with deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a female and discharging a firearm within the city limits.

This is the second shooting in Southern Pines Sandhills Sentinel has reported on in four days.

A person was shot Thursday around 7 p.m. in the parking lot of M & S Market located at 912 W. Pennsylvania Avenue. 

Southern Pines Police said they were looking for a Black female suspect and a Black male suspect with long dreads after they fled the scene in a silver passenger car.
