Man charged with felony obtaining property by false pretenses

The Aberdeen Police Department announced the arrest of William Branch, 35, of Rockingham.

On Dec. 9, 2021, Aberdeen officers were dispatched to Walmart in reference to a larceny and intentional miss-scanning of items.

Upon arrival, Aberdeen officers met with asset protection officers, who advised a male, later identified as Branch, who allegedly went through self-checkout and was intentionally under-ringing items.

Aberdeen investigators later investigated the incident, and after reviewing witness statements and video surveillance, they verified the facts of the report, said the Aberdeen Police Department in a press release. Investigators later confirmed Branch’s identity and obtained a warrant on Jan. 24, 2022, for felony obtaining property by false pretenses and misdemeanor larceny.

Attempts were made to locate Branch, but he was not apprehended in Moore County. On Nov. 3, 2024, Branch was located in Richmond County and was taken before a Richmond County magistrate. Branch was given a $1,500 secured bond and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
