Man drowns in Cameron pond

A Saturday fishing trip at a pond near Cameron has turned tragic for a family.

A group of men were fishing in a pond on Labor Day weekend in the 4300 block of Cypress Church Road when some left for a short time, leaving one behind to continue fishing, said authorities. When they returned, they found their friend’s kayak had overturned, and he was unresponsive in the water.

The other men immediately began CPR until emergency personnel arrived and took over. Despite everyone’s efforts, the man was declared deceased.

Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields identified the man in a news advisory on Sept. 5 as Juan Vieyra-Segundo, 42, of Southern Pines.

“The investigation into Vieyra-Segundo’s death is ongoing, and an autopsy through the NC Medical Examiner’s Office is pending,” said Fields.
