Moore County participates in Operation Green Light to honor veterans

The Moore County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution supporting Operation Green Light for Veterans on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Operation Green Light is a national program intended to show support for veterans and raise awareness about the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels to assist veterans and their families.

Now in its third year, Operation Green Light is expected to draw hundreds of counties to participate. The county’s role in administering services for veterans includes county Veteran Service Officers helping service members access more than $52 billion in federal health, disability, and compensation benefits each year, as well as other services supporting the approximately 200,000 service members who transition into civilian communities annually.

The resolution was read to the Board of Commissioners by Veteran Services Director Kelly Greene. The resolution noted several statistics that show why the initiative was started, including the fact that between 44 and 72 percent of veterans experience high levels of stress during the transition from military to civilian life.

“Whereas, the contributions and sacrifices of those who served in the Armed Forces have been vital in maintaining the freedoms and way of life enjoyed by our citizens; and whereas, Moore County seeks to honor individuals who have made countless sacrifices for freedom by placing themselves in harm’s way for the good of all,” read the resolution.

The resolution encourages its citizens in patriotic tradition to recognize the importance of honoring all those who made immeasurable sacrifices to preserve freedom by displaying a green light in a window of their business or residence from Nov. 1-15. By shining a green light, we let our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported.

Moore County Veteran Services staff assist veterans and their families to obtain local, state, and federal benefits.
