Paw and order: Southern Pines welcomes new police K-9

The Southern Pines Police Department recently announced that the department “proudly welcomes” its new addition to the K-9 Unit.

K-9 Zraza began her tour of duty with SPPD on June 13. She is a Belgian Malinois, born on February 10, 2024, and was purchased from Highland K-9 in Harmony, NC.

“K-9 Zraza is a high drive K-9 who loves to work, and she has a great demeanor,” writes Chief of Police Nick Polidori in a press release. “K-9 Zraza is trained on narcotics detection, article searches, and tracking.”

Zraza’s arrival comes less than a month after previous Southern Pines Police K-9, Ivy, retired on May 20 after nearly nine years of service.

Chief Polidori also explained that K-9 Zraza was purchased mainly through donations from the Moore County Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club.

Similarly, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office recently added a new K-9, Anna, to its staff. Anna’s purchase was made possible entirely through funds from drug seizures and no taxpayer dollars were used to purchase or train her or her handler.

“The SPPD looks forward to conducting K-9 demos throughout the community in the future with K-9 Zraza,” says Chief Polidori. “Welcome to the team, Zraza!”
