Moore weekly sports wrap-up

It’s a quiet time in sports as the three public high schools transition from fall sports to winter sports. Northern Moore County had a roller coaster of a week.  O’Neal has one team 2-0 and one 0-2 to start their basketball season. The Flyers are off to a rocky start in the early part of the season. 

North Moore Men’s Soccer: 

The Mustangs won on Monday night defeating River Mill 3-0 to advance to the Elite 8. 

Thursday night, in the Elite 8 of the State 1A Playoffs, the Mustangs ended their season with a 1-0 loss to Rosewood. 

North Moore Football:

Opened Friday night with the Veterans Paratrooper Sky-dive Team delivering the game ball. The Mustangs won at home against Gates County 30-8. They will advance to play Pender County in the third round of the state playoffs at home Friday night.

O’Neal Men’s Basketball:

Opened their season last Monday at home with a 51-44 loss to Cary Christian. 

Wednesday, they hosted Ravenscroft and took a 61-49 loss. 

O’Neal Women’s Basketball:

A different story from the women’s team Monday night. They opened their season with a 72-13 blowout win against Cary Christian.

Wednesday night, they defeated Ravenscroft 45-38 at home to start their season 2-0.

Sandhills Community College Basketball:

The Flyers defeated Hosanna Bible College 99-76 on Monday. 

Wednesday, the Flyers defeated Guilford Tech Community College on the road 106-99.

Saturday, they hosted Wake Tech Community College and were defeated 125-106. 

This week in sports: 


O’Neal Men’s and Women’s basketball will travel to St. David’s. The tip-off is Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Friday, the women will host Rocky Mount Academy at 5:30 p.m.

The men will host Fayetteville Christian Academy at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Sandhills Flyers:

Tuesday at Methodist University. Tip-off is at 8 p.m.

Saturday at Richard Bland College. Tip-off is at 3 p.m.

North Moore Football:

The Mustangs will host Pender County in the third round of the playoffs Friday at 7:30 p.m.
