Mother, child escape serious injury after car flips

A young woman and her child escaped serious injuries after a single-vehicle wreck Sunday afternoon in Southern Pines.

They were driving on U.S. 1 South between Midland Road and Pennsylvania Ave. when the car went off the road; it appeared she lost control on a dirt area before hitting a hill and flipping the vehicle.

According to radio traffic, Southern Pines Fire and Rescue requested a second rescue from Aberdeen Fire and Rescue out of precaution but later canceled them. The mother and child were able to get out of the vehicle.

The child was checked out on scene and released; the mother was transported by EMS to Moore Regional Hospital. It is believed that her condition is not serious.

The exact cause of the crash is being investigated by Southern Pines Police Department.
