Woman murdered in home invasion; residents shoot back, kill suspect

The Moore County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the murder of a woman during a home invasion off Sand Pit Road near Aberdeen.

Officials responded to a shooting on Forest Circle in the Sherwood Park subdivision Sunday afternoon where they found Tynasha Collins, 23, who had been shot in her home. The shooters fled the scene.

“Sheriff’s investigators determined that an exchange of gunfire occurred within the residence between the perpetrators and home occupants,” said Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields in a press release. “17-year-old Darius Nicholson of Richmond County, believed to be one of the perpetrators, was also shot during the incident. Nicholson was transported to Moore Regional Hospital by private vehicle where he later died from his injuries.”

Paramedics worked to save Collins’ life, but she was pronounced dead at the scene despite their efforts.

Numerous law enforcement officials were on the scene, and a large area had been cordoned off with crime tape. A K-9 arrived and could be seen with its handler searching in the area behind the home.

Law enforcement agencies were given a description of a vehicle possibly involved in the shooting. A car matching the description was located, and a person of interest was being questioned.

“Investigators are working to identify at least two more persons responsible for the home invasion and death of Collins,” said Fields. “The incident is believed to be drug-related.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Moore County Sheriff’s Office Tipline at 910-947-4444.

This is the fourth shooting Sandhills Sentinel has reported in just over two months.
