The Sandhills Community College Science Department and Student Government Association invite the public to a free event to celebrate the uniqueness of the Sandhills Gameland ecology, plants, and animals.

The hands-on activities will be in the Dempsey Student Center on Wednesday, April 3 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The Sandhills Gamelands is known as one of the best examples of longleaf pine habitat in the United States and is a natural wonder of North Carolina.

Partner organizations will host the many hands-on activity stations including NC Bionetwork, NC Wildlife Resources Commission, Fort Bragg, The Nature Conservancy, Sandhills Horticulture Department, and NC State University. These groups will engage participants in endangered bird species, rare plants and animals and conservation efforts.

Participants will be given a Gamelands Passport and receive a stamp at each station which will allow a chance at winning a door prize. Examples of station activities are the creation of art using longleaf pine needles and broadleaves, an examination of the role of hunting and fishing in the Gamelands, and the discovery of the connection between longleaf pines and naval stores. Participants will be able to post reflections on what they learned on a graffiti board.

Founded in 2010, the North Carolina Science Festival is the first statewide science festival in the United States.  During a month-long celebration every April, the Festival brings hundreds of events hosted by schools, colleges, libraries, museums, parks, businesses, and other community organizations together under one banner to recognize the economic, educational and cultural impact of science throughout the state.

The Festival is presented by the Biogen Foundation and produced by Morehead Planetarium and Science Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. For more information, visit www.ncsciencefestival.org.
