The new Area 1 Elementary School is making progress to open its doors to students in August 2019.

The school is being built to relieve overcrowding at Vass-Lakeview and Sandhills Farm Life Elementary Schools.  According to Moore County Schools, the building will be 113,772 sq. ft and hold up to 800 students from kindergarten through 5th grade.

The classroom wings in the school will have plenty of windows to allow natural light in each classroom. Moore County Schools said, “This daylight design will save energy and has been proven to promote student success and reduce absenteeism.”

The school will also be set up to “provide opportunists for self-guided learning and team-teaching strategies.”

The school is located on Camp Easter Road in Southern Pines.  Moore County Schools held a ground breaking ceremony in March when members of the school board, board of commissioners, Superintendent Dr. Bob Grimesey, and 3rd and 4th graders from Sandhills Farm Life and Vass-Lakeview took turns with the shovel.

Moore County Schools considered  the school’s attendance lines Monday.  The Board of Education agreed on criteria for what the new district lines should accomplish and are expecting the first proposals to be completed in September.

The school’s construction is scheduled to be completed by May of next year just in time for the 2019-2020 school year.
