Douglas Litton of Pinehurst, NC, age 80, passed away peacefully on Christmas, December 25, 2024, at FirstHealth Hospice House. He was born on November 14, 1944, in Glasgow, WV to the late Orville D. Litton and Virginia McQuillen Litton.
Doug was the youngest of 5 children. He was predeceased by Rebecca Fox, Kenneth and Keith with one surviving brother Charles of Grants Pass, OR. He was also preceded by his oldest daughter, Erin Litton. Doug is survived by his wife: Doe Ann Crocker Litton of Pinehurst; two children: Douglas Litton Jr. of Charleston, WV and Virginia Patterson of Acton, VA; seven grandchildren, as well as his pet schnauzer, Pepper.
Doug was a graduate of Cedar Grove High School and received an MA degree in Forensic Counseling from Marshall University in 1976.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War era serving in the US Army artillery. He and his company were steely-eyed missile men.
After receiving his degree, Doug was employed by the West Virginia Supreme Court assigned as a probation officer with the 13th Judicial Circuit, Kanawha County. In his career, Doug was employed as a juvenile detention director and a mental health clinician in West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina.
His favorite activities were baseball and golf. In his youth, he played American Legion Baseball. As an adult, he coached a youth baseball team, his probationers making up most of the players. In his retirement, other players’ golf games were a great source of pleasure and amusement for him.
A funeral service will be held on December 31, 2024 at 10 am at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines. Visitation will start at 9:15 am prior to the service. Burial with military honors will take place at Salisbury National Cemetery at 1:30 pm.
