obituary Jerry Dale Weis

Jerry Dale Weis, age 85, of Carthage, NC died June 28, 2020 after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

Jerry was born on Jan. 4, 1935 in Akron, Ohio, the son of the late Leon D. Weis and Mildred A. Plummer Weis. He graduated from Buchtel High School, Akron and the University of Akron with a degree in business administration.

He worked as a design draftsman for Burt Manufacturing Company in Akron. One of his designs was for the light lock, designed to keep light escaping from Distant Early Warning facilities.

At B.F. Goodrich he worked as a design draftsman in the tire department. He was part of the team that drew the tread designs for the first domestically produced radial tires. Unbeknownst to his wife, those tires were tested on the family car! While at B.F. Goodrich he became a computer programmer and was one of seven men selected for the initial computer programming team.

In 1968 he began working for Cooper Bessemer in Mt. Vernon, Ohio where he was a Computer Programmer Analyst and the Manager of Inventory Control. In 1978 he was transferred to Grove City, PA where he became Manager of Materials Management and Data Processing.

In 1963 he met and soon married a beautiful nurse, Diane H. Babinchak. Diane preceded him in death in 2011. He is also predeceased by his grandson, Nicholas J. Weis, a brother, Leon P. Weis, and nephews Jay Weis and Mark May.

He is survived by the four children he raised with Diane; Kathleen R. Yereb (David); Eric L. Weis (Jill); Marie H. Riedesel (John); Jonathan D. Weis (Heather). He is also survived by four granddaughters, Alexa and Lauren Weis and Holly and Lydia Riedesel, and his sister, Leah May. Also surviving is his son, Jim, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington, NC.
