Obituary for Virginia C. Samuels

Mrs. Virginia C. Samuels died September 2, 2023 (her 88th birthday) in Southern Pines, North Carolina.  Mrs. Samuels was born September 2, 1935, the daughter of Clyde and Edna Ruth Causey of Rockingham, North Carolina.  She moved to Southern Pines, North Carolina in 1955 with her husband, William S. Johnson and, together, they owned Johnson Insurance Agency until his death in 1968.  She managed the agency for several years before selling the business to Gouger, O’Neal & Saunders Insurance & Realty in Southern Pines.  She worked with GOS for many years in the insurance and accounting division of the business.

In earlier years, Mrs. Samuels was a member of the Southern Pines Junior Woman’s Club, a Girl Scout leader, and a Cub Scout Den Mother.  She became a member of Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in 1955.  Over the years, she served as a Deacon, Circle leader, Sunday School teacher, Choir member, and Treasurer of the Women of the Church.  She was also a member of Circle 6 and the Ligon Bible Class.

In 1975, Mrs. Samuels married William E. Samuels, Jr., who served variously as CEO, president, and chairman of the board of First Federal Savings and Loan of Moore County, which in 2000 merged with First Bank of Troy, after which Mr. Samuels became a director and vice-chairman of the board of First Bank.  Mr. Samuels predeceased Mrs. Samuels in 2014. 

Mrs. Samuels is survived by a son, Dr. William Stacy Johnson, Jr. (Louise) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; a daughter, Joy Johnson Giuseffi (John) of Patterson, New York; four grandchildren: Carson Johnson, Paige Johnson Waller (Joseph), William Giuseffi, and Emily Giuseffi; three step-children: W. Edward Samuels III (Michael) of Richmond, Virginia, Jay LeGrand Samuels (Ellen) of Oak Island, North Carolina, and Patricia Samuels Philbrook (Vicki) of Garner, North Carolina. In addition, she is survived by six step-grandchildren: Michelle Giuseffi, Erin Philbrook Wheeler (Martin), Meaghan Philbrook Kirsch (Seth), Will Philbrook (Cristen), Callison Samuels Roberts (Clayton), and Laura Samuels LeBlanc (Brian). Her legacy also includes nine great-grandchildren. She is survived by one brother, C. Harold Causey of Frederick, Maryland, one niece, one nephew, and their families.

A private family service will be held at Pinelawn Memorial Park.  The family requests that any memorial gifts be directed to Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, North Carolina.
