Obituary for Winifred Lewis Holland

Winifred Lewis Holland, 97, died November 15, 2023 in Southern Pines. A Requiem Eucharist will be offered on Saturday, December 2nd at 2:00pm in the Chapel at Penick Village, 500 East Rhode Island Avenue, Southern Pines, NC.

Born on September 4, 1926 in Fuquay Springs, NC, she was the first of the three children of Florrie and Roscoe B. Lewis.  Wini spent her formative years in Raleigh and attended Meredith and East Carolina Colleges.  She married Jule Carr Holland, Jr. in 1947 and began a family, her principal vocation, soon moving to Greensboro where she saw her children into adulthood.  She and J.C. resettled in Raleigh before moving to Oriental, NC.  She owned a better lady’s dress shop, Elizabeth Regina, in New Bern for more than a decade. She trained in watercolors and was an avid painter.  In 2005, she moved to Penick Village in Southern Pines, where she enjoyed friendship, community service, art, and support until her death.

She is predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Donald and Henry B. Lewis; her husband of 55 years, Jule Carr Holland Jr.; and her children Michael Lewis Holland and Patricia Ann Pope.  She is survived by her sons, Jule Carr Holland III (Dr. Thomas Maxwell Mundy) of Raleigh and Rodney Thomas Holland (Louise) of Durham, and by three granddaughters, Meghann Alexandra Holland, Sarah Elizabeth Harper and Bridget Harris Thienpont.
