John Valley Winchester, age 93, of Pinehurst, North Carolina formerly of Pickens, South Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Brookdale Nursing Home in Pinehurst, surrounded by his family.

A visitation will be held on Monday, February 25, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens, South Carolina.  Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery, Pickens, South Carolina with Military Honors.

John was born in Pickens, South Carolina on July 17, 1924 to Benjamin Tillman and Mary Garrett Winchester. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was a WWII Veteran. His achievements in life were numerous but he will be remembered as a man of God who loved everyone and everyone loved him as well.  He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his children, Sue Temple (Calvin) of Hope Mills , North Carolina and Robert  Winchester of Oregon City, Oregon; sisters, Leona Crowther, Christine Kearney, Mary Hull, Esther Kelley, Ruth Hinkle (Doug), Janie Sorrells (Tommy) and Myrtie Cochran all of  South Carolina; brother, Benjamin Winchester, Jr  (Jeanette) of  South Carolina; grandchildren, Melissa Coats (Ryan) of Newport News, Virginia and Laura Mount (Justin) of Warrenton, Virginia; seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Irwin Winchester; parents, Benjamin Tillman and Mary Garrett Winchester; sisters, Evelyn Breazeale, Elizabeth Howe and Martha Reavis; brothers, David, Hubert and D. S. Winchester.
