Outside fire on Aberdeen horse farm threatens homes Sunday

A large, fast-moving outside fire burned multiple acres of land at a horse park and threatened neighboring homes on Sunday afternoon.

The fire broke out around 12:15 p.m. at Valkyrie Sporthorses, which is located at 11597 Aberdeen Road just across the Hoke County line.

Sandhills Sentinel spoke to the property owner on scene, who told us that he and a family member were riding around the property in a Kubota UTV when dry grass caught fire beneath the machine.

The fire spread quickly and reached a wooded area, crossing a creek and a pipeline.

Fire personnel were staged at Carolina Industrial Park to protect large propane tanks and homes in the new Taiz Ridge subdivision.

The North Carolina Forest Service was on scene with a plow, and a spotter plane was also utilized.

Smoke from the fire had drifted several miles around. As of just before 3 p.m., the fire was only partially contained, and Aberdeen Rockfish Railroad operations in the area were suspended.

Moore County firefighters have fought multiple significant outside fires in less than two weeks.

This is at least the second significant outside fire in less than two weeks that Moore County firefighters have fought. A statewide burn ban issued by the North Carolina Forest Service remains in place until further notice.
