Passenger airlifted after head-on crash in Cameron

Traffic on a busy highway through Moore County came to a halt between Coley Lane and Donathan Lane in Cameron. Around 3 p.m., a head-on collision shut down the busy road in the 600 block of Highway 15-501.

According to officials on scene, a Toyota passenger car traveling northbound toward Tramway crossed left of the centerline. A Chevrolet passenger car traveling southbound toward Carthage saw the crash about to happen at the last second and turned the wheel left to attempt to avoid the collision.

The vehicles struck each other on the front passenger corners, damaging both cars. The Toyota left the roadway and struck a power pole, breaking it in half.

The driver of the Toyota was the only occupant and was checked out at the scene by EMS but refused transport to the hospital.

The driver and rear passenger of the Chevrolet were both transported to Moore Regional with non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger of that vehicle was flown from a landing zone set up by Carthage Fire Department at Highway 15-501 and Bryant Road to a nearby trauma center with serious injuries.

Highway 15-501 was closed for about two hours while crews worked the scene.

Highway Patrol was on the scene investigating.

Responding units were Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Office and N.C. Highway Patrol. Duke Energy was on the scene due to the broken power pole.
