Pickleball now in play for Aberdeen Lake park

Pickleball is officially in play for the Town of Aberdeen. Four new pickleball courts have been completed at Aberdeen Lake Park, bringing a long-anticipated recreational amenity to residents who previously had no public tennis or pickleball options in town.

Aberdeen, with a population of about 10,000, now boasts its own space for the fast-growing sport.

“Our Board of Commissioners has been eager to add pickleball courts, but we have been searching for the right spot and opportunity,” said Aberdeen Parks and Recreation Director Adam Crocker in a statement to Sandhills Sentinel. “With the damage Tropical Storm Chantal did to Aberdeen Lake Park, we had a paving company in the park to repair our lower parking lot. The board decided to take advantage of the situation to have the courts paved at the same time.”

According to Crocker, it was then a coordinated effort by the Public Works, Facilities Maintenance, and Parks crews to seal and paint the courts, order the fence installation, and install the nets and signs.

New pickleball courts open in Aberdeen

The courts were built in a low-lying area across from the existing shelter, a location that Aberdeen Town Manager Paul Sabiston previously described as convenient because of existing restrooms and other amenities.

An engineer’s review prior to construction confirmed that the site could withstand flooding similar to that seen during Tropical Storm Chantal.

“Everyone moved quickly and efficiently, but with a short time frame, there will still be a few more projects to complete,” added Crocker. “The final painting will be finished when the weather warms in the spring, and we will look to add windscreens and potentially lighting in the future. However, we are excited that they are open and available for play at this time, while we look to continue to improve them in the future.”
