“Please sign this petition to help us keep Chief Hanson at Pinecrest High School!! He means so much to so many of us kids at Pinecrest High School, and the school will not be the same without him. Hanson has done so much for the students and the families here, and we will be lost without him.”

This is the beginning of a petition on change.org started Saturday by Pinecrest High School students to keep Assistant Principal Herb Hanson, known as Chief, at Pinecrest High School. Currently, the petition has garnered more than 3,000 signatures, with a goal of 5,000.

Specific details concerning Mr. Hanson’s employment status are not available, but chatter on social media indicates that he was offered a choice between being transferred to a different school or having to resign/retire, with a meeting scheduled Tuesday with school officials.

Some of the students and community surmised Hanson was being transferred or forced to retire due to the recently lost ACT test scores Pinecrest students took in the spring.

In response to a request for more information, Catherine Murphy, Moore County Schools Director of Communications, responded she would provide an update on Hanson’s employment status Tuesday when the district office reopens after the holiday.

Pinecrest students will be holding a rally Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. at the Pinecrest High School Courtyard.

The full petition is available here.

The next Moore County School Board Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 2 p.m.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
