Pinehurst collecting community recipes for America's 250th

As part of the Village of Pinehurst’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, residents are invited to take part in a special community project that celebrates shared history through food, family traditions, and personal stories.

The Village is creating a commemorative community cookbook titled “Stars, Stripes & Shared Traditions: A Pinehurst Recipe Collection Celebrating America’s 250 Years.” The collection will feature recipes and stories submitted by residents and families, highlighting how traditions are passed down through generations and shared around kitchen tables, holidays, and community gatherings.

“America 250 gives us a meaningful opportunity to reflect on who we are, where we have been, and what connects us as a community,” said Village Manager Doug Willardson. “This cookbook is one way we can capture those connections in a very personal and lasting way.”

Residents are encouraged to submit recipes that are meaningful to their families or tied to personal traditions, holidays, or memories. Submissions may include appetizers, main dishes, side dishes, desserts, and drinks. Participants are also invited, but not required, to include a short story about the recipe’s history, its significance, or the memories associated with it.

Online recipe submissions will be accepted through Feb. 13 through the Village website at www.vopnc.org/our-community/america-250.

For those who prefer to submit handwritten recipes or photographs of recipe cards, staff at the Given Memorial Library and Tufts Archives will be available to assist. Residents may bring handwritten recipes or photos to the library, where staff will help scan and upload the materials for inclusion in the cookbook.

The cookbook is scheduled for release in spring 2026. A limited run of 250 numbered copies will be available for purchase beginning in the spring. Additional distribution and pricing details will be announced closer to the release date.

The cookbook is part of Pinehurst’s broader America 250 commemoration, which includes a yearlong series of events, exhibits and community initiatives reflecting on the nation’s founding ideals and how they continue to shape the community today.
