Pinehurst recognizes first responders, facilities staff

The Pinehurst Village Council issued several proclamations during its April 28 meeting recognizing upcoming national observances honoring public safety personnel and municipal workers.

The council proclaimed May 2 – 3 as National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend in Pinehurst and May 3 as Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day. The observance recognizes firefighters who have died in the line of duty and honors their service and sacrifice.

“Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day offers a solemn opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by firefighters and their families, and to express our collective gratitude for their unwavering commitment to public safety,” reads the mayoral proclamation. “It is fitting that the Village of Pinehurst joins the nation in honoring these courageous individuals, supporting their families and colleagues, and recognizing the essential service provided by firefighters every day. Our community is strengthened and safeguarded by the dedication of firefighters who stand ready at all hours to respond to emergencies, protect lives, and uphold the highest ideals of service.”

Council members encourage residents and businesses to join in remembering fallen firefighters and supporting their families and colleagues.

Council members also recognized National Police Week, set for May 10 – 16, and proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day in the village. The observance acknowledges and honors law enforcement officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty and acknowledges the role police play in protecting lives, property, and the rights of citizens.

“It is important that all citizens know and understand the duties, hazards, responsibilities, and sacrifices of their Police Department,” read Mayor Patrick Pizzella. “The men and women of the Police Department of the Village of Pinehurst unceasingly provide a vital public service.”

In addition, the council proclaimed May 13 as World Facilities Management Day. The designation recognizes professionals who maintain public buildings, grounds, and infrastructure that support municipal services and community events.

The proclamation thanks the management professionals who “work behind the scenes yet play a vital role in delivering reliable infrastructure, promoting safety and sustainability, and supporting community events, recreational amenities, and essential municipal operations.”

The proclamation specifically highlighted the work of Pinehurst’s Buildings and Grounds Department and the Harness Track Department for maintaining village facilities and public spaces.

Pizzella added that these observances coincide with Public Service Recognition Week and said they provide an opportunity to thank employees and first responders who help maintain the community’s safety and quality of life.
