Sanford family killed in plane crash in Lee County

A Sanford family died in a plane crash on Monday afternoon in Lee County near the Raleigh Exec Jetport.

The family of four was identified by the State Highway Patrol as Travis Buchanan, 35, Candace Buchanan, 35, Aubrey Buchanan, 10, and Walker Buchanan, 9, according to ABC 11.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash of the Cirrus SR22 plane in a field, north of Sanford.

WRAL News reports that the family owned Buchanan Farms in Sanford, located on Broadway Road.

The two children were students at Grace Christian School in Sanford. The school shared their passing on its Facebook page. 

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of one of our Crusader Families,” said Grace Christian School. “The Buchanan Family; Students Aubrey (rising 5th) and Walker (rising 4th) along with their parents, Travis and Candace, went to be with the Lord today. During this incredibly difficult time, we stand together in support of their family and one another. We extend our love, prayers and deepest condolences to their family, friends, classmates, teachers and staff. Please know that grief support services are available for students and staff. We encourage anyone who needs help to reach out to the school office.”

Raleigh Exec Jetport said on its Facebook page that the small aircraft was based at its airport.

“We will fully cooperate with investigators and we extend our heartfelt condolences to family and friends,” said Ralieght Exec Jetport.
