Moore County Schools reached a milestone Monday when it broke ground on the new Southern Pines Elementary School.

Local political, educational, and community leaders gathered with Southern Pines Primary and Elementary School students to break ground at the construction site, located off Carlisle Street and Morganton Road.
The school will combine K-2 students from Southern Pines Primary School and grades 3-5 students from Southern Pines Elementary School into an 800 student school.
The two-story school is scheduled to open in 2020.
Moore County voters approved a bond referendum that will fund the school.
