Standoff with man ends peacefully near Carthage

A lengthy standoff between a man and the Moore County Sheriff’s Department ended peacefully Monday night after several hours outside of Carthage. Several members of the sheriff’s department responded to a location off Healing Acres Lane for a man who had allegedly fired a gun and ran off into a wooded area.

Several units were in the area shortly after and set up a perimeter to attempt to locate the man. A drone was used to keep an eye on his location, but the man allegedly had also fired at least one shot to try and shoot it down.

As a precaution during the incident, a medevac helicopter landed nearby and was on standby. A unit with Moore County EMS was also staging nearby.

Over three hours after the incident started, as it began to get colder and started to rain, the man finally gave himself up to authorities. He was evaluated at the scene and transported to Moore Regional Hospital for further evaluation.

Responding units included Moore County Sheriff’s Department, Moore County Public Safety, Moore County EMS, Carthage Fire Department, and UNC Carolina Air Care.
