Southern Pines street dedication school's request granted

During Wednesday’s Southern Pines Town Council Agenda meeting, the town dedicated a section of previously private streets to the town for maintenance purposes. Byrd and Davis Streets were formerly platted in Yadkin Park subdivision.

With a completed annexation, on May 14, 2019, all of the portions of Byrd and Davis Streets’ rights-of-way were incorporated into the Town of Southern Pines. The incorporation was a step in the dedication process, as streets maintained by the Town are required to be within corporate limits of the Town.

In other business news, Emmanuel Episcopal Church was granted an extension for its temporary modular classroom for its school until 2023.

The temporary structure is needed while determining the best way to add space for students during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Increasing ventilation is primary, and the layout of the school facilitates natural air flow as many classrooms open to outdoor common areas.

“We ordered canopies and cushions for children and clipboards,” Head of School Jill Connett said, about its natural outdoor ventilation method and small classroom sizes, “We’ll just have classroom bubbles.”

The Southern Pines Town Council Regular Meeting will be held on July 14 at 6 p.m.
