Considering whether to attend college or go straight into the workforce can be a tough decision for high school students. Not everyone graduates knowing what they want to do. Some go straight into a job, sometimes at a low wage, while others find employment with adequate pay, but the situation offers little in the way of career advancement.

Neither of these options can set them on the path to be able to live the sort of life desired down the road. The key to getting off to a better start after high school is having all the information needed to make the best decision.

Sandhills Community College’s Continuing Education Department is offering a two-week camp for graduating high school seniors and current juniors who would like more information about options after high school.

On Mondays through Thursdays, June 18 through June 28, from 9 am until 2:30 pm, “Bridge to College and Careers” will help participants explore various careers in growing industries. The program, offered for the first time last summer, was awarded international recognition from the Learning Resource Network (LERN) for Excellence in Programming.

Among various activities, like participating in career interest assessments, and working with a virtual welder, participants are exposed to the multitude of career training programs offered by Sandhills and the job opportunities available. Students will learn the “Seven Habits of Highly Effective College Students” which provides personal success skills not only for college but life.

The group will tour the SCC campus, visit area businesses, and learn about locally-obtainable careers. Lunch is served each day, and all fees are waived for un- and underemployed students.

Whether it be preparing for a job or entering college now or in the future, SCC seeks to help high school graduates take their next step. For more information or to register for “Bridge to College and Careers,” call (910) 695-3980.
