Woods fire burns semi and car

A nice breezy day turned out to be a disaster for some local residents. A small fire burning in a wooded area got out of control and caught a large truck and car on fire.

Multiple emergency units were dispatched around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to reports of a possible structure fire in the area of Highway 15-501 and Red Branch Road.

Carthage fire units en route advised dispatch that a large column of black smoke could be seen from the Moore County Fairgrounds.

When the first units arrived on the scene at Ed Lane off of Mason Road outside Carthage, they found a semi-truck fully engulfed in flames along with a Chevrolet Camaro. There was also a working woods fire.

Within minutes, the fire was knocked down, but both vehicles were a total loss.

A plow from N.C. Forestry was requested to help contain the woods fire but was later canceled.

Responding to the fire were Carthage Fire Department, Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Highfalls Fire Department, Moore County Public Safety, Moore County Sheriff’s Department and N.C. Forestry. Southern Pines Fire Department was also dispatched and placed on standby at Carthage for additional incoming calls.
