One person is dead, and one person was airlifted to the hospital after their vehicle went over a guardrail outside of Vass Wednesday.
Just before 4 p.m., a Vass Police Officer called in the crash on U.S. Highway 1 near U.S. 1 bypass and Crains Creek Road.
The Ford F150 pickup truck struck the guardrail at a high rate of speed, went airborne, and crashed down an embankment. The truck flipped over and suffered heavy damage. There were two male occupants in the vehicle who were pinned in.
According to Cypress Pointe Fire Chief Mike Cameron, two helicopters were called originally, but after firefighters were able to gain access to the patients in the wreckage, they found one to be deceased. The other patient was life-flighted to an area trauma center. His condition is unknown at this time.
It is unclear which victim was driving due to the conditions of the accident. The cause of the accident is being investigated by the State Highway Patrol.
Traffic was detoured due to northbound lanes being closed. At 7 p.m, three hours after the accident, two wreckers were still working to retrieve the truck from the scene due to the terrain.
Responding to the scene were Vass Police Department, Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue, Crains Creek Fire & Rescue, Whispering Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County Sheriff’s Department, Moore County Public Safety, and N.C. State Highway Patrol.
