Aberdeen police warn of phone scam

The Aberdeen Police Department is warning citizens of a phone scam.

“Please be aware of a phone scam circulating in our community in which individuals impersonating law enforcement officers are extorting money from citizens,” said the department on its Facebook page on Thursday. “These scammers call from a spoofed number and falsely claim that recipients have warrants for their arrest. To avoid arrest, they tell victims they must make a payment immediately via cryptocurrency.”

The department is asking the community to remember the following information:

Law enforcement agencies will NEVER call you to make payments over the phone or resolve warrants.

Law enforcement agencies will NEVER ask for gift cards, money transfers, or cryptocurrency.

Scammers rely on fear and urgency to pressure victims into complying.
