As people in Moore County begin to pick up the pieces left in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, recovery is underway for residents and local volunteers who are assisting in the Lobelia area, outside of Vass.

Operation AWOL (Angels Working on Lobelia) has set up a command post at 4584 Lobelia Road and are accepting donations of food, water, and cleaning supplies at the post.

Chyrie Moore, Public Information Officer for Operation AWOL, said other donation sites are located at the Southern Pines Fire Department and Cypress Pointe #1 Fire Department.

For people who would like to donate clothing for Moore County storm victims, may do so at Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care located at 1500 W. Indiana Ave. in Southern Pines.

For those who would like to donate construction supplies, they are in need of boards – various lengths of 2×4, 2×6, 2×8,1/2 plywood, 5/8 plywood, 3/4 plywood, 1/2 screws, shingles, tar paper, flashing, nails, and rolls of R-19 insulation.  Construction materials should be dropped off at our command post.

The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina of the Sandhills delivered several pallets loaded with care packets for the residents Thursday afternoon, and Operation AWOL donated $1,000 to the food bank for other Moore County residents who suffered destruction due to the storm.

Operation AWOL  is currently applying for membership with the North Carolina Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster.

According to Moore, by applying for membership, Operation AWOL can understand each other, other organizations, and public officials to work together during times of disaster preparedness, response, relief and recovery.

Moore said they are currently working on creating a GoFundMe page, and they have a Facebook page.

“So many wonderful people and organizations have helped in the recovery already,” stated Moore.  “People from all walks of life have made donations including doctors, lawyers, neighbors, area churches, local schools, and the Moore County Chamber of Commerce. But we need more help.  Please stop by the command post, the Moore Coalition, Southern Pines Fire Department, or the Cypress Pointe #1 Fire Department to drop off donations.”
