Sandhills Bogeys catcher Charlie Muniz is shattering batting records early in his senior college season.
Playing for the University of Cumberlands, his team is just 21 games into their season, and Muniz hit two home runs on Saturday, making that 10 home runs of the season. With those two additional home runs, Muniz has become the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes’ career home run leader. He now has 89 career home runs.
That isn’t the only record Muniz has broken in college. Last season, he broke five Patriots records, including career hits (275), career home runs (78), single season home runs (36), career RBIs (239), and single season RBIs (101).
He has already stepped into the batter’s box 77 times, recorded 31 hits for an average of .403 and has earned 32 RBIs so far this season. Muniz and the Patriots will complete their regular season on April 26.
Last season with the Bogeys, he was a 2024 Old North State League (ONSL) All-Star and Home Run Derby winner. In 2024, Muniz had 97 at-bats in 29 games, recording 21 runs, 33 hits, 29 RBIs, 17 BBs, and 17 SOs. He finished the regular season with a .340 average and 9 HRs.
Muniz is returning to the Bogeys this summer to lead a veteran squad on their quest for a second ONSL Championship, the first since the 2022 season.
The Bogeys open their 2025 campaign on May 29 at Dempsey Diamond at Bogey Ballpark on the campus of Sandhills Community College versus the Coastal Coconuts.
