Support groups can play a vital role for patients as they recover from certain medical conditions or diagnoses, offering a safe and understanding environment for patients to share experiences, challenges and triumphs.
FirstHealth launched a new support group for people who have experienced amputation surgery.
The Step Forward Amputee Support Group will hold its inaugural meeting from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Clara McLean House in Pinehurst. Additional meetings will be held on the final Tuesday of each month.
“Our goal is to help amputees, people with limb loss or limb difference and their families cope with the initial shock of loss and regain control of their lives through education, compassion and encouragement,” said infectious diseases physician Gretchen Arnoczy in a news release. “Amputees can do virtually anything they want to do, and we want to support them in their endeavors.”
Each of the support group meetings will feature a presentation followed by a time for questions, answers and discussion.
“One important part of the group is time for socializing and physical activities that exercise the mind as well as the body,” Dr. Arnoczy said. “We hope this group can become a lifeline to empower our patients to reclaim independence and build confidence as they move forward in their lives.”
FirstHealth’s Step Forward support group will meet monthly at the Clara McLean House (20 First Village Drive, Pinehurst). Clara’s House is a haven of hope, support services and affordable lodging for out-of-town patients, families, caregivers, and so much more.
Envisioned, constructed and operated by The Foundation of FirstHealth, Clara’s House focuses on all the needs of families and caregivers with a loved one in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital or FirstHealth Hospice.
Outpatients also stay there while they receive treatment. For more information, call 910-715-4220.
