A son was airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition, and his stepmother was transported to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital after a crash south of Pinebluff on Sunday afternoon.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, two vehicles were traveling side by side northbound on U.S. 1 when they collided, sending both off the roadway and into the trees. The son was driving a Honda Civic, which split in half, while his stepmother and father were in the second. The father was uninjured in the two-vehicle crash.
Authorities confirmed that the son lost control of the Honda and that both vehicles appeared to be speeding, which remains under investigation.
The parents’ vehicle veered from the road and crashed into a tree head-on.
The impact split the son’s vehicle in two. Pieces of the car traveled a significant distance before coming to a stop.
Emergency responders initially requested a second helicopter for the stepmother, but due to the distance of the medevac, she was instead transported by ambulance in critical condition.
