Chavis named Aberdeen police chief

The Town of Aberdeen announced Deputy Police Chief Brian Chavis has been selected as the town’s new police chief, succeeding Chief Carl Colasacco, who is retiring on Dec. 31.

Chief Chavis was born and raised in Vass and is a 2008 graduate of the Sandhills Community College Basic Law Enforcement program. Chavis began his law enforcement career with the Town of Aberdeen in July of 2008 as a police officer. He was promoted to sergeant in 2014 and lieutenant in 2016. In 2019, Chavis received his Advance Law Enforcement Certificate and Associate Degrees in Criminal Justice and General Education. He was promoted to patrol captain in 2020. In 2022, Chavis received his B.S. in Criminal Justice, graduated from the FBI National Academy, Leadership Institute, and FBI — Leeda Command Leadership Institute, and completed the Leadership Certificate Program, a 400-hour course.

Chavis was promoted to deputy police chief in 2023. While holding the position of deputy chief, he graduated from the North Carolina Justice Academy Police Chiefs Institute, FBI — LEEDA 995th Supervisor Institute, and became a general instructor/adjunct professor at Sandhills Community College.

When notified of the promotion, Chavis stated he was “very excited to be able to lead this team of talented professionals who are committed to public service and excellence in the police department and hopes to continue to build trust and strengthen relationships with all members and organizations in our community.”

There will be a meet and greet in January at the police department on Highway 1.
