Alice “Kay” Simpson, 87, passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.
Born in Durham, Kay was daughter to the late Jack and Payton Powers.
Kay graduated from Durham High School in 1954. She later attended beauty college in Durham and was a beautician for over 36 years. Additionally, she was a proud member of the Durham Orange County Quilting Guild for over 30 years. Quilting was Kay’s passion and she devoted much of her time to teaching and leading quilting classes at her church and for other community groups.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Albert Simpson, and siblings: Ruth (Billy) Phipps, Jackie Crawford, and Joe (Ann) Powers .
Kay is survived by her three children: daughter, Sharon (Harry) Anderson of Spruce Pine; two sons, Terry (Jill) Simpson of Durham and Ronald Simpson of Carthage; sister Joyce (Larry) Bissette of Bennett. She was also survived by her grandchildren: Nathaniel, Monique (Vincent), Keegan (Samantha), Mindy (Cale) and great-grandchildren; Carlee, Cooper, Maggie, Audrey, and Sadie.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 23, 2023, at Red Branch Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jeff Mitchell and Rev. Ron Chaney. The burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m.
